An autumn foraging experience can offer a different view of Sardinia: woodland, Mediterranean shrubs and the food traditions connected with them. But an October walk, a myrtle harvest and a mushroom excursion are not automatically the same activity. Choose an experience whose seasonal focus and guide match what you actually want to learn.

We found documented wild-herb experiences, but no verified “best” tour combining myrtle berries and mushrooms with confirmed availability for the current dates. The practical approach is to contact providers with your dates and ask what the outing includes before booking.

October is not a guaranteed myrtle harvest

The Association of Sardinian Myrtle Producers describes berry harvesting in the late-autumn period through January. Bresca Dorada’s producer catalogue likewise places fruit ripening from November and harvesting through January. These are seasonal references, not a forecast for a particular bush or farm.

That makes a promised October basket of ripe mirto berries something to question. A guide may be able to introduce the plant and its place in local traditions without harvesting it. Ask whether the activity is plant observation, an authorised harvest or a producer visit: each offers a different experience.

If your main interest is the liqueur, a conversation with a producer can be worthwhile even when berries are not ready. Confirm that a visit is offered on your date, and distinguish learning about production from collecting ingredients yourself.

Published experiences you can enquire about

FA Travel’s sustainable-experiences catalogue includes a wild-herbs foraging workshop. It is a documented lead for an enquiry, rather than confirmation of an October departure or a mushroom-specific itinerary.

Near Cagliari, In Our Garden publishes a wild-herb experience. Its description centres on plants and traditional knowledge. Ask which parts of the experience are available during your stay; this guide does not repeat the provider’s therapeutic claims or treat a herb walk as medical advice.

For either option, request the actual location, duration, walking difficulty, language and price. Ask what happens if the season offers little to collect. An engaging guided walk should still make sense as a learning experience rather than depend on a guaranteed harvest.

Mushrooms need a different level of checking

A guide knowledgeable about wild herbs is not automatically qualified to determine whether mushrooms are edible. Before choosing a mushroom-focused outing, ask who provides the mycological expertise and how any specimens intended for eating will be checked.

The ASL Cagliari’s official guidance says not to consume wild mushrooms before inspection by its mycological inspectorate and stresses bringing all collected mushrooms for checking. A photograph, identification app or reassuring comparison with a mushroom seen elsewhere is not a substitute.

The service’s published information describes free checks for citizens by qualified mycologists. Confirm current locations and arrangements directly rather than building a holiday itinerary around an older timetable.

You can also choose an observation-only outing. Learning about the woodland and photographing mushrooms in place provides an autumn activity without turning uncertain finds into dinner.

Confirm permission and the full plan

Ask the organiser where the walk takes place and whether collecting is permitted there. A path being open to visitors does not settle permission to harvest plants or mushrooms. Land ownership, local requirements and protected-area rules need a location-specific check.

Do not accept a generic internet rule as proof of the conditions for your route. Request clear instructions from the organiser and the relevant land manager or authority when necessary. If permission is uncertain, keep the activity to observation.

For an October booking enquiry, give the provider your dates, accommodation area and interests. Say whether you want plant identification, a myrtle-production visit or a mushroom walk with appropriate expertise. Ask about weather cancellation and whether transport or any food service is included.

The strongest autumn experience is one built around what is genuinely available that week. A thoughtful herb walk, a later-season myrtle visit and a properly organised mushroom outing can each be rewarding; they do not need to be sold as a single guaranteed harvest.
