If you want one final swim before flying out of Olbia, the smartest beach is not necessarily the most famous one. What matters is a short and predictable drive back to Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport, straightforward access and enough time to deal with parking, a rental-car return, check-in and security. The coast immediately south and northeast of Olbia gives travelers several possibilities, but a literal “10 minutes from the airport” should be treated as an estimate rather than a guarantee: summer traffic can change journey times quickly.

The good news is that Olbia Airport is unusually well prepared for this idea. The terminal currently offers a dedicated private “After Beach Showers” service specifically for passengers who want a final swim before departure.

Le Saline: the practical last-swim candidate

For travelers approaching the airport from the south, the Le Saline area is one of the most logical places to consider. It lies on the coast between Olbia and Murta Maria, close to the airport corridor, without requiring a detour toward the more distant resort beaches of Costa Smeralda.

Le Saline is a long, open beach rather than a tiny hidden cove. That matters on departure day because the goal is to get into the sea, dry off and leave without adding a complicated hike or boat transfer to the schedule. The surrounding lagoon and coastal environment also give the area a different character from the granite coves farther north.

Driving times should always be checked live before getting into the water. In quiet conditions the airport can feel very close; in summer, road congestion and parking can turn a short map distance into a less comfortable schedule.

Pittulongu if you are coming from northern Olbia

Pittulongu is another useful option, particularly for travelers finishing a trip on the Olbia or Golfo Aranci side. It is one of Olbia's best-known beach districts and offers a classic final glimpse of northeast Sardinia: pale sand, clear water and views across the gulf.

It is generally a longer airport run than the closest beaches south of the city, however, and the route can be affected by traffic. Pittulongu therefore works better when you have a generous buffer rather than when boarding time is approaching.

If your accommodation is already in Pittulongu, a morning swim followed by the drive to the airport can be an efficient final day. Driving there from the opposite direction solely for a quick dip is less sensible.

Do not plan the beach around a perfect ten-minute drive

Online maps can show surprisingly short travel times around Olbia, but departure day is the wrong moment to rely on a best-case estimate. Beach parking, queues at fuel stations, traffic toward Olbia and the rental-car return all add uncertainty.

If you have a rental car, remember that the airport's rental-car terminal is close to the arrivals area, but returning a vehicle still takes time. Olbia Airport states that its main rental-car terminal is approximately 50 metres from the terminal, while some operators use other parking areas or shuttle arrangements. Check your specific rental company's return instructions before the final beach stop.

Fueling the car before returning it can also become a last-minute problem. If the rental agreement requires a full tank, do that before the swim when practical rather than assuming you will find a quiet fuel station on the way back.

The airport shower changes the equation

Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport currently operates an “After Beach Showers” service inside the Departures Area. It is designed explicitly for passengers who want to swim before flying.

The private room can be used for 40 minutes by one person, a couple or a family of up to four. The airport currently lists a shower, private bathroom, hairdryer, towels, disposable slippers, shower gel and body lotion among the included facilities.

As of September 2026, the published prices are €25 for one person, €40 for two and €60 for a family of up to four. The airport lists summer opening hours of 09:00–22:00 and winter hours of 09:00–20:00, with earlier final access times. The service also currently includes five hours of storage for one bag, Fast Track access and a 20% discount on the airport Club Lounge. Prices and hours can change, so verify them when booking.

This makes a last swim far more comfortable: instead of boarding salty and sandy, you can change and shower at the airport after returning the car.

How much time should you leave?

Do not subtract the estimated drive from your flight's departure time and use everything else for swimming. Work backwards from the time you need to be at the terminal, then add time for leaving the beach, reaching the car, traffic, fuel if necessary, the rental-car return and luggage.

Olbia Airport's current passenger guidance says travelers should arrive with sufficient time for formalities and lists one hour for Schengen flights and two hours for extra-Schengen flights in its departure information. Airline requirements can be stricter, especially for baggage drop, and passengers should follow the instructions for their own flight.

If you are flying to the United States or another destination outside the Schengen area, the final swim needs a considerably larger safety margin than a short domestic or Schengen flight.

A simple last-day plan

Keep luggage secured and out of sight, choose a beach that is already on your route toward Olbia rather than crossing the city for a prettier one, and check live navigation before swimming. Set a firm departure time from the beach that already includes a traffic buffer.

After the swim, shake off as much sand as possible before getting into a rental car and keep dry clothes easy to reach. Return the car, enter the terminal and use the airport shower if booked. The airport's official parking is directly in front of the terminal, with the closest short-stay sector about 20 metres from the entrance, which can also be convenient for travelers who are being dropped off or using their own vehicle.

For a final Sardinian swim before an Olbia flight, proximity beats prestige. Le Saline is a particularly practical area to investigate when approaching from the south, while Pittulongu can fit naturally into an itinerary from the north and northeast. Whichever beach you choose, live traffic and your airline's deadline should make the final decision. Missing twenty minutes of swimming is much cheaper than missing the flight.
