“I left the United States and live in Sardinia on $1,500 a month” is an appealing social-video premise. But it is not a complete cost-of-living comparison. The figure may work for someone with inexpensive housing and limited expenses; it does not establish that a newcomer can reproduce the same lifestyle. The useful questions are where they live, whether they pay rent and what their total excludes.

No specific video or documented household budget was supplied for this claim. Instead of treating it as a verified example, start with current housing evidence and a budget built around your own circumstances.

First, turn dollars into euros

Sardinian bills are paid in euros. The European Central Bank reference rate for 30 September 2026 was $1.1355 per euro. At that dated rate, $1,500 converts to approximately €1,321, before transfer fees or a provider’s exchange-rate margin.

That is a calculation for context, not a guaranteed conversion today. If your income remains in dollars, your euro spending power changes with the exchange rate. Also distinguish money available after tax from gross income: they cannot fund the same monthly budget.

Rent can change the answer completely

Immobiliare.it’s August 2026 market data reported average advertised residential rents of €13.62 per square metre across Sardinia. Provincial figures ranged from €4.35 in Medio Campidano to €21.05 in Gallura Nord-Est Sardegna, with Sassari at €9.12. These are asking-price indicators, not signed leases or promises of an available home.

For a simple 50-square-metre illustration, those Sassari and Gallura figures produce about €456 and €1,053 respectively. Against €1,321, that leaves approximately €865 or €268 for everything else. Actual listings may differ substantially. The exercise shows why an island-wide affordability claim is too broad.

Cagliari city is another distinct market: the portal’s provincial breakdown lists €14.11 per square metre for the municipality, equivalent to about €706 in the same hypothetical calculation. Do not confuse the city with the provincial average.

When reviewing a listing, ask whether the lease covers the whole year, whether utilities and condominium charges are separate and what deposit or agency payment is required. A winter-only arrangement does not establish your annual housing cost. Someone living in a family-owned property is also budgeting under different conditions from a new tenant.

Compare your US life with the same household

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports average annual expenditure of $78,535 per consumer unit in 2024, approximately $6,545 monthly. That is a national household measure across varied circumstances, not the cost of one person living in a particular US city. Dividing it by a social creator’s personal budget would not produce a meaningful savings percentage.

Use your own recent statements instead. Compare the same number of people, similar housing and the same approach to transport, food and leisure. Replace an expense only when you have a credible local equivalent. A smaller home and fewer restaurant meals may reduce spending, but that is partly a lifestyle change rather than a pure price difference.

A lower rent can also create another expense if you need a car. Include insurance, maintenance and fuel alongside any purchase cost. Before choosing a cheaper location, test the routes you would actually use for groceries, appointments and work.

Separate monthly living from the move

Your recurring worksheet should include rent, household bills, groceries, transport, communications, healthcare or insurance, leisure and a reserve. Use actual quotes where possible. Keep deposits, flights, furniture and administrative expenses in a separate arrival budget, so a cheap month does not conceal an expensive relocation.

Healthcare arrangements need confirmation for your status; do not assume a visitor receives the same coverage as an eligible resident. Likewise, affordability does not provide immigration permission. The US State Department’s Italy guidance directs Americans planning stays beyond 90 days to obtain the appropriate visa and residence permit.

The Italian consulate’s elective-residency guidance expressly says that route does not allow work activities. Do not assume a remote salary qualifies for it; identify the relevant route before committing to a move.

A $1,500 budget is therefore a scenario to test against a real lease and complete expenses. Sardinia may fit your plans, but the strongest evidence is a workable annual budget for your household, not someone else’s headline.
