Can you swim in a Sardinian river while cows watch from the bank? In the Rio Posada valley, seeing cattle grazing close to the water is entirely plausible. The river runs through a remarkably green floodplain below the hilltop village of Posada. But there is an important distinction: the presence of cows is documented; safe, permitted swimming at a particular river spot is not established.

Where is Rio Posada?

Rio Posada flows through northeastern Sardinia's Baronia region and reaches the sea near Posada. Its lower course, floodplain, ponds and coastal wetlands form part of the Tepilora Regional Natural Park. From the historic village and Castello della Fava, visitors can appreciate the contrast between farmland, winding waterways, dunes and the Mediterranean coast.

Are there really cows beside the river?

Yes, cattle are part of the landscape. The park authority explicitly describes cattle and sheep husbandry on the inland parts of the Posada floodplain. Depending on the season and where animals are grazing, you may encounter cows near riverbanks or fields. That does not mean animals are present at a specific location every day, nor that visitors should enter their pasture.

Can you actually swim in Rio Posada?

Do not assume so. We could not verify a designated, monitored freshwater bathing site in Rio Posada, or that entering a particular river stretch is allowed and safe. River depths, currents, water quality and access conditions can change after rain or releases from upstream water infrastructure. Livestock and agricultural runoff also make it especially important not to judge water quality by its appearance.

If you want to swim, use one of Posada's designated coastal bathing areas instead, subject to current monitoring and local signs. The beach areas around Su Tiriarzu, San Giovanni and Orvile offer the sea experience without guessing about an unmonitored river pool.

What else can you do in the Posada valley?

For a close look at the river environment, consider an organized kayaking experience where offered and permitted. Sardinia's official tourism website highlights kayaking in the Posada valley, and the protected wetland is a rewarding place to observe birdlife from appropriate paths and viewpoints. The landscape includes reedbeds, ponds and habitats used by herons, waders and other waterbirds.

How to behave around grazing cattle

Keep your distance, particularly from cows with calves, and never approach, feed or attempt to photograph an animal at close range. Do not cross fences or block an animal's route to water. If cattle appear between you and a path, give them space and find another way. Keep dogs controlled and follow any park or landowner restrictions.

When should you visit?

Spring and early summer often offer appealing green scenery, but wildlife and livestock sightings vary. Check the weather and recent rainfall before any riverside outing. For a day that combines the valley with swimming, visit Posada's historic centre and protected landscape, then head to a designated beach where bathing information is available.

The verdict

Cows watching from the Rio Posada riverbank? Quite possible. Swimming safely in the river beside them? Not something to promise. The real attraction is the unusual meeting of working pastureland, protected wetlands, medieval scenery and the Sardinian coast. Enjoy the river as a natural landscape, and choose monitored coastal waters for your swim.
