A Sardinian holiday with your dog works best when the accommodation and beach arrangements are planned together. A hotel may accept pets in certain rooms while excluding them from its beach, restaurant or pool area. For families arriving from the United States, the first step is also international travel paperwork: acceptance by a hotel does not establish eligibility to enter Italy. Choose your base around the places your dog can actually accompany you.
There are documented options in different parts of the island, from a designated beach area at Porto Quadro in the north to Tiliguerta’s dog beach near Costa Rei in the southeast. They do not amount to permission for dogs on every neighbouring beach. Check the exact area, current local rules and seasonal operation for your travel dates.
Beaches where the dog policy is explicit
Santa Teresa Gallura’s municipal announcement identifies an Animal Friendly area at Porto Quadro, established in 2023. The notice describes free access to a delimited section of beach and water, subject to the municipal regulation. Use this as a starting point for enquiries about the designated area; it is not a current confirmation that every service or access arrangement is unchanged.
Ask the municipality about current signage and documents accepted for a visiting dog. The published regulation addresses controlled access to the designated zone, including transit through other beach areas. Follow the marked boundaries rather than assuming the whole Porto Quadro shoreline has the same status.
In southeastern Sardinia, Tiliguerta Dog Beach is a managed option at the camping village near Costa Rei, open to overnight guests and outside visitors according to its website. Its rules require management approval, identification and vaccination records. Dogs must remain supervised, and access can be refused under the facility’s behavioural and health conditions.
Contact Tiliguerta for the operating dates, reservation arrangements and current charges. Its dog-beach page still displays a price table labelled 2024, so those figures should not be used as a quote for a 2026 visit. Ask which services are available on your date and whether your US-issued records meet the facility’s check-in requirements.
Two hotel policies to compare carefully
Near Porto Cervo, Hotel Pitrizza’s terms welcome dogs and cats weighing under 12 kilograms, approximately 26 pounds, without a standard pet supplement. Pets must be leashed on the premises and cannot enter the pool or beach. Its restaurant and bar rules allow well-behaved, leashed pets, subject to staff intervention if they disturb other guests. Confirm your dog’s acceptance with the hotel before booking.
At Hotel Cormorano in Baja Sardinia, pets require a request at reservation and are limited to a maximum weight of 10 kilograms. The published supplement is €20 per animal per day. Its policy restricts access to dining and leisure areas and the hotel’s beach concession. A room reservation here therefore needs a separate plan for beach days with your dog.
These examples show why a booking filter is only the beginning. Send the property your dog’s weight, the number of animals and your stay dates. Ask about permitted room types, supplements, cleaning charges, dining arrangements and whether a dog can ever remain alone. Request written acceptance before committing to a non-refundable booking. Seasonal hotels should also confirm that they will be operating on your dates.
Prepare the US journey and the family’s daily routine
The USDA APHIS Italy page announces new non-commercial EU health certificates effective from 1 October 2026. For the standard certificate route, work with a USDA-accredited veterinarian on microchip identification, valid rabies vaccination and USDA endorsement. APHIS currently states that the veterinarian-issued non-commercial certificate is valid for 30 days and that endorsement must occur within ten days of arrival in the EU. A printed endorsed certificate must accompany the animal.
Have the veterinarian check your dog’s full vaccination history and itinerary against the current requirements, including any connection through another country. Airline pet reservations, carrier dimensions and transport conditions are separate matters. Plan the return to the United States as well as the outward trip, using the current official entry guidance.
Once on the island, carry water, a bowl, waste bags and the documents requested by your accommodation or beach operator. Plan shorter outings with shade and rest breaks, and organise meals around places where the dog is accepted. Families can share supervision so the dog is never unattended while others swim. A nearby permitted beach and a workable hotel policy are more useful than a long list of places described loosely as pet-friendly.
