Getting online in Sardinia is easier when you decide how your US phone will connect before landing in Cagliari, Olbia or Alghero. A travel eSIM can provide mobile data without a shop visit, while an Italian prepaid SIM may suit travellers who want a local number and calls as well as internet access. Your existing US plan is another option if its international allowance meets your needs. The best choice depends on your phone, itinerary and usage rather than a single island-wide ranking.

Sardinia is part of Italy, so look for an Italy plan rather than a special Sardinia package. Confirm the provider’s geographic coverage and the exact plan terms, especially if the same trip includes other countries. An Italy-only travel eSIM and an Italian operator’s EU roaming allowance are different products.

Check your US phone before buying

Your phone needs to support the SIM format you intend to use and be unlocked for another carrier. An eSIM does not bypass a carrier lock. For iPhone users, Apple’s international eSIM guide explains how to check: open Settings, General and About, then look for “No SIM Restrictions” beside Carrier Lock. If the phone is locked, speak to your US carrier before departure.

For Android, check the exact model and regional version against the provider’s compatibility list. Do the same for an iPhone bought in a different market. A phone with no physical SIM tray needs an eSIM; a shop’s plastic SIM will not solve that limitation. Ask an Italian operator whether your chosen prepaid offer is available in the format your device requires.

Install a travel eSIM while you have a stable internet connection, following its instructions. Installation and the start of a plan’s validity are not always the same event. Read the activation policy so a short-duration package does not expire earlier than expected.

Choose between travel data and an Italian number

For a short holiday using maps, booking apps and internet messaging, a data-only travel eSIM is worth considering. Airalo’s Italy page, checked on 3 October 2026, offers fixed-data and unlimited options and identifies Wind Tre as its primary network, with additional supported networks. Check the specific package’s networks, validity, hotspot rules and any speed restrictions at checkout. This is a documented option, not a claim that it has the best reception everywhere in Sardinia.

A data-only package does not supply ordinary mobile calls and SMS unless those features are explicitly included. Internet calling through an app is different from dialling a local landline. If you expect to call restaurants or accommodation regularly, compare a plan with an Italian number against the calling arrangements on your existing US line.

TIM Tourist provides a concrete local comparison. At the same check date, TIM advertised 200 GB, unlimited calls within Italy and 100 international minutes for €14.99 over 30 days, plus €10 for the SIM card: €24.99 in total for those two advertised charges. Confirm eligibility, the countries included in international calls and the final price. The international-minute bundle should not be assumed to cover every destination.

For a local SIM, bring your passport and ask the official store what identification and activation details a visiting US customer needs. Online activation workflows may require information or credentials you do not have. Verify the store’s opening hours and the selected offer’s eSIM availability instead of assuming there will be a suitable staffed kiosk at your arrival airport.

Set up for your route and avoid unwanted roaming

Look at the underlying Italian network, not only the travel eSIM brand. Check your accommodation and planned stops using operator coverage tools such as TIM’s mobile coverage page and Vodafone’s coverage checker. Coverage predictions are useful for comparison but cannot guarantee reception inside a particular room, along a remote trail or in a sheltered cove.

After arrival, select the travel line for cellular data and follow its roaming and network instructions. Some travel eSIMs require data roaming on their own line. Keep your US line’s roaming settings separate and check its charges for calls and messages; choosing another data line does not automatically eliminate every home-carrier fee. Review automatic data switching if you want to prevent an unintended fallback.

Before leaving reliable Wi-Fi, download offline maps and save your accommodation address, booking confirmations and provider support details. If you need to share data with a laptop, confirm tethering limits before purchase. A modest package may suit navigation and messaging, while uploads, streaming and remote work call for a larger allowance. Choose the plan around those activities, then test it before starting your first drive across the island.
