If you have read older travel advice saying there is no Uber in Sardinia, that information is now outdated. Uber is available in Sardinia in 2026, although it does not work exactly like the cheap, high-density ride-hailing service travellers may know from London, New York or other major cities.

Uber's own current Italy directory lists numerous Sardinian destinations, including Cagliari, Olbia, Alghero, Sassari, Oristano, San Teodoro, Arzachena, Golfo Aranci, Palau, Stintino and Santa Teresa Gallura. Uber also explicitly lists its Taxi product in Cagliari and Olbia. Uber's Italy city directory

So why do people still say Sardinia has no Uber?

Because for years that was broadly true from a traveller's point of view. Italy's regulatory framework for taxis and private-hire vehicles is very different from markets where almost anyone can become an UberX driver using a private car.

Uber's Italian model has consequently developed around licensed transport operators, including taxis and NCC — noleggio con conducente, or private hire with driver — rather than simply reproducing the classic UberX model everywhere.

Sardinia also has a distinctive transport market: demand is highly seasonal, distances between resorts can be large and many destinations have relatively small permanent populations. That makes on-demand availability much less predictable outside the main cities and tourist centres.

Where can you actually use Uber in Sardinia?

The most straightforward examples are Cagliari and Olbia. Uber's official Taxi page currently lists both Sardinian cities among the Italian locations where users can request a taxi through the app. Uber Taxi Italy

Uber's Cagliari page says rides can be requested through the app around the clock, subject to actual driver availability. The company also published new Cagliari pricing information in July 2026 covering Comfort, Van and Black services and showing a Sassari tariff table as well. Why can the app still feel like “there is no Uber”?

Availability is not the same thing as density. You can open an app in a supported Sardinian location and still find few or no nearby vehicles, particularly late at night, outside summer, or in a remote coastal or inland area.

That is the biggest practical difference for visitors. Do not assume that seeing your town on Uber's coverage list means a car will always be waiting five minutes away.

What are the best alternatives?

Local taxis remain the simplest option in cities, airports and larger resorts. Taxi ranks are especially useful at Cagliari, Olbia and Alghero airports and around major transport hubs.

NCC private transfers are often the better solution for an airport-to-resort journey, an early flight, a family with luggage or a long transfer to somewhere such as Costa Rei, Chia, Villasimius or Costa Smeralda. You normally arrange the vehicle in advance and agree the service before travelling.

The NCC sector is particularly relevant in Sardinia. In February 2026, the Sardinian regional government announced that the Italian state had withdrawn its constitutional challenge against Sardinia's regional NCC rules, which the region had defended as necessary because island transport needs differ from those of large mainland metropolitan areas. Should you rent a car instead?

For many Sardinia holidays, yes. If your plan includes beaches, archaeological sites, mountain villages or multiple parts of the island, a rental car gives you far more flexibility than relying on ride-hailing.

This is particularly true outside Cagliari, Olbia and the busiest resort zones. A beautiful beach may be easy to reach in the morning but surprisingly difficult to leave in the evening if you are depending on finding an available taxi or app-based driver.

Uber from Cagliari Airport

If you land at Cagliari Elmas, check the Uber app when you arrive and compare the available option with the official taxi rank. For a distant resort, compare both with a pre-booked NCC transfer.

If your accommodation is in central Cagliari, you also have an unusually good public-transport alternative: the airport railway station connects directly with the city, so you may not need a car at all for the airport transfer.

Uber from Olbia Airport

Olbia is one of the most useful places in Sardinia to have app-based transport because it is the gateway to the northeast and Costa Smeralda. Uber officially lists Taxi availability in Olbia, but summer demand can be intense.

For a fixed flight arrival and a destination such as Porto Cervo, San Teodoro, Palau or another resort outside the city, booking a transfer in advance can still be less stressful than relying on a vehicle appearing on demand.

What about Alghero?

Uber currently includes Alghero in its Sardinian city directory. Nevertheless, travellers should still keep the local taxi system and pre-booked transfers in mind, particularly for airport journeys and late-night trips.

The practical rule applies across the island: check the app, but have a backup.

The answer for 2026

So, why is there no Uber in Sardinia? There is. The more accurate question in 2026 is whether Uber has the same type of service and vehicle availability you expect at your exact location.

In Cagliari and Olbia, Uber can be a genuinely useful transport option, including access to local taxis through the app. Across other supported Sardinian destinations, availability can vary. For remote beaches, rural accommodation and long airport transfers, taxis, NCC services and rental cars remain essential alternatives.

That is why old advice saying “Uber doesn't exist in Sardinia” persists—and why travellers should stop relying on it.
