If you want one Sardinian city for Halloween, Sassari is our best pick. The reason is not simply that it has costume parties. Sassari has repeatedly turned its historic centre into a large public celebration of Su Mortu Mortu, the northern Sardinian tradition connected with the remembrance of the dead.

Sardinia has its own customs around October 31 and the first days of November. The regional tourism authority describes traditions such as Is Animeddas and Su Mortu Mortu as ancient rites in which the worlds of the living and the dead symbolically meet. Children traditionally go from house to house asking for offerings for the souls, receiving bread, fruit, nuts and sweets—the Sardinian parallel that makes modern trick-or-treating feel surprisingly familiar.

Why choose Sassari?

Sassari has developed one of the most visible urban versions of this tradition. In previous editions, the municipality-backed “Su Mortu Mortu – il nostro Halloween” filled the historic centre with storytelling, street theatre, performers, jugglers, dancers and costumed characters drawn from Sardinian folklore as well as international Halloween imagery.

The celebration has included activities for children, face painting, sweets, an outdoor horror tunnel and a costumed procession through the old town. Past editions culminated around Piazza Tola, giving visitors a combination of family-friendly activity in the early evening and a livelier city atmosphere later at night.

Su Mortu Mortu is more than Sardinian Halloween

Calling it “Sardinian Halloween” is convenient for travellers, but it misses part of the story. Across Sardinia, the festival of the souls has different names and customs. A 2026 cultural guide notes that Su Mortu Mortu, Is Animeddas, Su Bene 'e sas Animas, Is Panixeddas, Su Peti Coccone and Su Prugadoriu are regional variations rather than one standardized island-wide festival.

The recurring element is remembrance: children visit homes asking for a symbolic gift on behalf of the dead. Traditional offerings included dried fruit, pomegranates, chestnuts, bread and local sweets; today, candy and chocolate often appear alongside them.

What Halloween in Sassari feels like

The appeal for a visitor is the mixture. You may see witches, skeletons and modern Halloween costumes beside figures inspired by Sardinian legends such as the janas. The official Sassari programme has deliberately combined Sardinian, Anglo-Saxon and other traditions, transforming streets in the centre into an open-air theatre.

That makes Sassari particularly easy for international travellers: you can enjoy something recognizably Halloween-like without losing the local cultural identity that makes spending October 31 in Sardinia different from celebrating it elsewhere.

What about Oristano?

Oristano is still an attractive base in late October, especially if your trip is focused on western Sardinia. The wider Campidano tradition is commonly associated with Is Animeddas, another Sardinian festival of the souls in which children traditionally go door to door asking for offerings.

For a traveller choosing specifically on the strength of the Halloween atmosphere, however, Sassari has stronger evidence of a recurring large-scale city-centre event. The 2025 celebration again brought families, children and young people into the streets, beginning with a Su Mortu Mortu procession and continuing with entertainment in Piazza Tola.

And if you want a big modern Halloween party?

There is another option in 2026: Cagliari. The city's official tourism portal lists the fifth Halloween Sardinia Festival for October 30 and 31, 2026 at the Opera Music Forum, with music and entertainment running from 18:00 until 04:00. That makes Cagliari the stronger choice if your priority is a large indoor nightlife event rather than traditional Sardinian atmosphere.

Planning Halloween 2026 in Sassari

At the time of writing, we have not found a complete official Sassari programme for October 31, 2026. Previous editions demonstrate a strong recurring tradition, but visitors should not assume that past schedules, routes or activities will be identical this year.

Check the Comune di Sassari's announcements closer to the date before planning around a specific parade or performance. If the city confirms another full Su Mortu Mortu programme, stay within walking distance of the historic centre so you can experience the streets before and after the main events without relying on a car.

Our pick

Sassari is the best all-round choice for Halloween in Sardinia if you want the island's own traditions mixed with costumes, street entertainment and a lively historic centre. Choose Cagliari instead for a confirmed 2026 festival and late-night party. Choose smaller towns and villages if your priority is the most intimate version of the traditional festival of the souls.

Halloween in Sardinia is most interesting when you look beyond pumpkins. The island already had its own night of spirits, gifts and remembrance—and Sassari is one of the easiest places for a visitor to see that old tradition meet the modern Halloween celebration.
