Yes — October can be one of the best months of the year for hiking in Sardinia's Supramonte.
The brutal heat of midsummer is usually gone, the mountains are quieter and walking for several hours becomes far more comfortable.
But “cooler” does not mean automatically easy. The Supramonte is rugged limestone country, and autumn adds its own variables: shorter daylight, sudden rain, slippery rock and conditions that can change quickly inside gorges.
Why October works so well
In July and August, long exposed hikes can become exhausting because of heat and intense sun. October normally offers a much better balance for serious walking.
Daytime conditions around the lower eastern Supramonte and Dorgali area can still be pleasantly mild, while mornings and evenings are noticeably cooler.
That makes sustained climbs, rocky descents and routes with limited shade much more enjoyable than at the height of summer.
Is October the best month?
There is no universal best month, but for hikers rather than beach-focused visitors, October belongs to the strongest part of the calendar.
Spring and autumn are generally the most attractive seasons because temperatures are moderate and the landscape is better suited to long days on foot.
October has an additional advantage: much of the peak summer tourism has disappeared.
What temperatures should you expect?
Conditions vary dramatically with altitude, exposure and whether you are close to the coast or deep inland.
On a sunny October day, walking temperatures can still feel warm, particularly on exposed limestone. Higher ground, shaded valleys and early mornings can feel much colder.
Do not dress for the temperature you see at your hotel on the coast. Carry layers.
The main October risk is rain, not heat
This is the important seasonal trade-off.
Autumn brings a greater chance of unsettled weather than summer, and heavy Mediterranean rain can transform normally dry channels very quickly.
That matters enormously in narrow gorges and canyon environments.
If substantial rain or thunderstorms are forecast, reconsider routes through confined terrain rather than assuming a waterproof jacket solves the problem.
Gorropu in October
Gola di Gorropu is one of Sardinia's most famous hikes and October can be an excellent time to visit.
The gorge lies between the Supramonte territories of Orgosolo and Urzulei and is formed by the Flumineddu river.
Without summer's strongest heat, the approach and return can be considerably more comfortable.
However, Gorropu is exactly the kind of place where recent rainfall and current access conditions matter. Check conditions locally before setting out.
Do not underestimate the walk back
Visitors often focus on reaching the gorge and forget that some approaches require a substantial climb on the return.
Choose the route according to your fitness, start early and keep enough water and daylight in reserve for the way back.
October makes the temperature easier; it does not make the elevation disappear.
Tiscali is another superb autumn hike
The archaeological site of Tiscali sits inside a collapsed limestone doline in the Supramonte between Dorgali and Oliena.
Getting there on foot is part of the experience.
The combination of archaeology, woodland and limestone landscape makes Tiscali particularly rewarding in autumn, when the walk is less punishing than during the hottest part of the year.
Official tourism guidance recommends using expert guides for excursions in this area, and that is good advice if you are unfamiliar with the Supramonte.
Lanaitho Valley and the Oliena side
The Valle di Lanaitho gives access to some of the most fascinating parts of the Oliena Supramonte, including routes toward Tiscali and the wider limestone interior.
This is classic Sardinian mountain scenery: holm-oak woods, rock walls, caves and terrain that can feel much more remote than its map distance suggests.
October's softer light and cooler air suit this landscape beautifully.
Orgosolo and the Montes forest
On the Orgosolo side, the Supramonte changes character again.
The Montes forest contains extensive holm-oak woodland, including the old-growth forest of Sas Baddes, while Monte Novo San Giovanni rises above the surrounding landscape.
This is a strong October choice if you want mountain walking combined with the cultural experience of Orgosolo.
In 2026, Orgosolo's Autunno in Barbagia weekend is October 17–18, so hikers visiting then can combine a mountain day with open courtyards, local food and village traditions.
October days are shorter
This sounds obvious, but it changes how you should plan.
A route that feels relaxed with late June daylight can become uncomfortable if started too late in October.
Begin early, know your expected walking time and leave a generous buffer before sunset.
Carrying a headlamp is sensible even if you have no intention of hiking after dark.
Trail markings are not always what visitors expect
The Supramonte is not one continuous, uniformly signposted hiking park.
Some popular routes are straightforward to follow; others cross complicated limestone terrain, old shepherd paths and areas where navigation can be genuinely difficult.
Do not assume that a line downloaded to your phone guarantees an easy trail on the ground.
Offline maps are essential
Download your route before leaving accommodation.
Mobile reception can be unreliable in remote valleys, gorges and mountain interiors.
A charged phone, offline map, backup power and the ability to understand your route are basic equipment rather than optional technology.
When should you hire a guide?
For Gorropu on a standard well-understood approach in good conditions, experienced hikers may be comfortable independently after checking local information.
For more remote Supramonte routes, complicated crossings, caves or unfamiliar terrain, a local guide can dramatically improve both safety and the experience.
The Supramonte contains layers of pastoral history, archaeology and natural features that are easy to walk past without understanding what you are seeing.
What should you carry in October?
Use proper hiking footwear with good grip. Limestone can become extremely slippery when wet.
Carry sufficient water even in autumn: cooler weather reduces thirst but does not eliminate dehydration on a long climb.
Add a waterproof shell, warm layer, sun protection, food, first-aid basics, offline navigation and a headlamp.
Do you still need sun protection?
Absolutely.
Sardinia can produce bright, powerful sunshine well into autumn, and exposed limestone reflects light.
A cool breeze can make you underestimate how much sun you are receiving.
Check the forecast for the mountain, not just the beach
Weather at Cala Gonone or another coastal resort does not perfectly describe conditions higher in the Supramonte.
Look at the forecast for the specific area and elevation you plan to hike.
Pay particular attention to thunderstorms, accumulated rainfall, wind and temperature changes.
After heavy rain, change the plan
Flexibility is one of the secrets to a good October hiking trip.
If conditions make a gorge or technical route questionable, choose a forest walk, village day or easier open route instead.
The Supramonte will still be there tomorrow.
Is October good for Selvaggio Blu?
The famous Selvaggio Blu along the Baunei coast is a different proposition from an ordinary day hike.
It is a demanding multi-day route involving difficult navigation, exposed terrain and, depending on itinerary, climbing or abseiling sections.
Autumn temperatures can be favorable, but this is not a route to attempt casually because the weather feels pleasant. Most visitors should approach it with experienced specialist guides and appropriate logistics.
October versus May
Both can be excellent.
May offers longer daylight, spring vegetation and generally comfortable temperatures. October often brings a quieter atmosphere, warm Mediterranean light and relief after the long Sardinian summer.
The trade-off is that October has shorter days and a greater need to watch autumn weather systems carefully.
October versus August
For hiking, October wins easily for many people.
August gives you long, dry days but also intense heat, strong sun and larger visitor numbers around famous coastal areas.
If your primary purpose is walking rather than swimming, the cooler autumn conditions are a major advantage.
Can beginners hike the Supramonte?
Yes, provided they choose the route rather than simply choosing the destination name.
There are accessible walks and guided experiences as well as very demanding wilderness routes.
Tell a guide or local operator honestly about your fitness and hiking experience. “Supramonte hike” can mean anything from a manageable excursion to a long and difficult mountain day.
WikiSardinia's verdict
October is one of our favorite months for hiking the Supramonte.
The main reason is exactly what hikers hope for: you can walk without battling the relentless midsummer heat.
Choose a stable-weather day, start early, carry layers and water, and treat rain forecasts seriously.
For a first experience, consider Gorropu, Tiscali or a guided excursion from Orgosolo or Oliena.
In summer, the Supramonte can feel like a test of endurance against the sun. In October, on the right day, you finally get the chance to concentrate on the mountains themselves.
