Outdoor dinners are one of the pleasures of a Sardinian summer: a terrace, a sea view and a long evening meal. Mosquitoes can sometimes spoil the moment, particularly around sunset and near gardens, standing water or sheltered corners. A combination of personal repellent, a little airflow and sensible clothing can help you enjoy dinner with fewer bites.

1. Apply mosquito repellent before you sit down

Use a repellent suitable for your age and circumstances, and follow the product label for where and how often to apply it. Apply it to exposed skin as directed, avoiding eyes, mouth, irritated skin and hands that may touch food. Do not spray repellent directly onto plates, cutlery, glasses or food. If you are also using sunscreen, follow both products’ instructions on application order and reapplication.

In Italy, you may see familiar brands such as Autan, as well as other products sold in pharmacies and supermarkets. Choose by the active ingredient and label instructions rather than assuming that one brand works best for everyone.

2. Choose a table with a breeze or a fan

Mosquitoes can have more difficulty flying in moving air, so a table with a gentle breeze or a fan directed across the seating area may help reduce landings. Ask for a spot with airflow rather than a still corner beside dense plants or a damp garden. A fan is a useful extra measure, not a guarantee that you will avoid every bite.

3. Use mosquito coils carefully

Outdoor mosquito coils, sometimes called zampironi in Italian, can help repel mosquitoes when used as directed. They produce smoke, so use them only in suitable outdoor settings and follow the package instructions. Keep a coil stable and well away from food, table linens, children, pets and anything flammable; never leave it burning unattended. If smoke bothers you or your companions, choose a fan and personal repellent instead.

4. Wear light, breathable clothing

A lightweight long-sleeved shirt and trousers or a long skirt can reduce the amount of exposed skin. Loose-fitting clothing is often more comfortable in warm weather than tight fabric. If mosquitoes are particularly active, covering ankles and feet can help too, especially if you are dining near vegetation or water.

5. Pick your location thoughtfully

If you have a choice, sit away from stagnant water, damp shaded corners and dense vegetation. Restaurant terraces vary, so you do not need to avoid outdoor dining altogether; simply ask whether a breezier table is available. On a holiday rental terrace, empty containers that collect rainwater and keep doors or window screens closed where practical.

A simple pre-dinner checklist

  • Apply an appropriate repellent according to its label.
  • Choose a breezy table or ask whether a fan is available.
  • Wear light clothing that covers more of your skin.
  • If using a mosquito coil, follow its instructions and keep it away from food and flames.
  • Avoid relying on any single measure to prevent every bite.

Enjoy the evening with fewer bites

The best approach is to combine a suitable skin repellent, airflow and clothing that covers exposed skin. A mosquito coil may be an additional option outdoors when used safely, but it is not essential. With a little preparation, you can enjoy Sardinia’s outdoor restaurants and sunset dinners more comfortably.
