Searching for the “Orgosolo mushroom festival” this October? There is an important date correction to make before you drive into the Barbagia mountains.
Orgosolo's confirmed 2026 Autunno in Barbagia weekend is Saturday October 17 and Sunday October 18 — not October 10–11.
The Municipality of Orgosolo has official administrative records confirming the event for October 17–18, and the official 2026 Autunno in Barbagia calendar places Orgosolo on the same weekend.
Is there a Sagra dei Funghi in Orgosolo this weekend?
As of October 8, we could not verify an official standalone 2026 event in Orgosolo specifically called Sagra dei Funghi.
What is officially confirmed is Autunno in Barbagia – Orgosolo, traditionally associated with the local name Gustos e Nuscos, on October 17–18.
That distinction matters. October is wild-mushroom season in Sardinia, and mushrooms can certainly be part of the wider autumn food culture, but visitors should not travel to Orgosolo on October 10–11 expecting a mushroom festival that has not been confirmed.
When is Autunno in Barbagia in Orgosolo in 2026?
The dates are October 17–18, 2026.
The wider Autunno in Barbagia circuit runs through central Sardinian villages from September into December, with different communities opening their historic centers on different weekends.
On October 10–11, the confirmed participating villages include Gavoi, Lollove, Onanì and Tonara. Orgosolo follows one week later, together with Belvì.
What happens in Orgosolo?
Autunno in Barbagia is much more than a conventional food fair.
The concept of Cortes Apertas — “open courtyards” — brings visitors into courtyards, workshops, streets and historic spaces where local producers and artisans present food, crafts and traditions.
In Orgosolo, that experience is layered onto one of Sardinia's most distinctive villages.
Come hungry
The food is one of the main reasons to visit.
Expect the flavours of inland pastoral Sardinia rather than coastal resort cooking: local cheeses, bread, meat, traditional sweets and regional products presented by producers and food operators.
Specific menus and stalls can vary, so it is better to arrive curious than to plan your day around one dish advertised unofficially online.
What about wild mushrooms?
October is naturally associated with mushroom season in Sardinia's mountain and woodland areas, especially after suitable autumn rain.
The forests around the central island create exactly the landscape people associate with autumn mushroom hunting.
But wild mushroom availability is weather-dependent, and seeing mushrooms in a market or restaurant does not mean visitors should collect them independently.
Do not forage without checking the rules
Wild mushroom identification can be dangerous, and Sardinian municipalities and forestry areas may apply collection rules, quantity limits or other restrictions.
Never eat a wild mushroom because it resembles one you recognize from a photograph or an app.
If mushroom foraging is part of your trip, use a qualified local guide and check the current rules for the exact municipality and area before collecting anything.
The real star of Orgosolo: the murals
Even without a festival, Orgosolo is one of the most memorable villages in Sardinia.
Its historic center is covered with murals addressing politics, social struggles, international events, pastoral life and Sardinian identity.
The mural tradition developed from the late 1960s and expanded through the work of teacher Francesco Del Casino, his students and many later artists.
During Autunno in Barbagia, the streets become especially atmospheric because the murals, open courtyards, food and local traditions all occupy the same walkable village.
Look for su Lionzu
Orgosolo also preserves the tradition of su Lionzu, the distinctive silk head covering worn with the women's traditional costume.
The fabric is produced through a highly specialized local craft tradition, with silk and saffron playing central roles.
Autunno in Barbagia is an excellent opportunity to see local craftsmanship as a living practice rather than simply an object behind museum glass.
Listen for canto a tenore
Orgosolo is also deeply associated with Sardinia's canto a tenore, the extraordinary multipart pastoral singing tradition recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
If live singing appears during the weekend, stop and listen.
Like launeddas, canto a tenore makes far more sense when experienced among people and places where the tradition still belongs to community life.
Go beyond the village: the Supramonte
Orgosolo sits beside one of Sardinia's wildest landscapes.
The Supramonte is a limestone territory of cliffs, plateaus, forests, caves and deep valleys.
Nearby, the Montes forest includes the ancient holm-oak woodland of Sas Baddes, while Monte Novo San Giovanni rises to 1,316 metres and offers spectacular mountain scenery.
A festival weekend can therefore become a two-part trip: food and culture in Orgosolo, followed by a guided excursion into the Supramonte.
Do not improvise remote Supramonte hikes
This is rugged country rather than a landscaped park.
Routes can be poorly marked, phone coverage can be unreliable and distances are deceptive.
For longer or remote routes, a local hiking guide is the sensible choice.
Should you visit on Saturday or Sunday?
Either day works, but Saturday can be attractive if you want to stay overnight and experience the village after the main daytime crowds begin to thin.
Sunday is convenient for a day trip but can be particularly busy when weather is good.
Arrive early whichever day you choose.
Where should you park?
Large events can change traffic circulation and parking arrangements around the historic center.
Follow temporary road signs and municipal instructions on arrival rather than relying entirely on normal map routing.
Parking farther from the center and walking is often less stressful than trying to drive as close as possible to the busiest streets.
What should you wear?
October in inland Sardinia is not beach weather by default.
Orgosolo sits at roughly 600 metres above sea level, and temperatures can feel dramatically cooler than on the coast, particularly in the evening.
Bring comfortable shoes for steep streets, a light waterproof layer and something warm enough for after sunset.
Is the event free?
Access to the village and the general Autunno in Barbagia event is normally free, while food, products, workshops or individual experiences may have their own prices.
Do not assume every activity listed in a programme is included without charge.
What if you are in Sardinia this weekend, October 10–11?
Do not abandon the idea of an autumn festival.
The official 2026 calendar lists Gavoi, Lollove, Onanì and Tonara for October 10–11.
You can visit one of those villages this weekend and save Orgosolo for October 17–18.
WikiSardinia's recommendation
If your search began with “Sardinia best mushroom festival Orgosolo,” think of the trip a little differently.
Come to Orgosolo on October 17–18 for Autunno in Barbagia, local autumn food, open courtyards, crafts, murals and the culture of the Supramonte.
If wild mushrooms appear on menus or stalls, treat them as one seasonal pleasure inside a much larger experience.
Orgosolo does not need an invented mushroom festival to be worth the journey. In October, the village itself is the event.
